Gower West and Gower Middle School will be closed through April 30th eLearning will resume on Monday, April 6th and will continue Monday – Thursday for our students; leaving Fridays for our Teachers to plan and address individual student needs accordingly.
As expected, the Governor took statewide action earlier today and announced that the Stay-at-Home order, social distancing, and the suspension of in-person instruction will continue until April 30th. Even though our school buildings will remain closed through this period, Teaching and Learning will continue. Additionally, the 2019-20 school year will still end on Friday, May 22nd. This timeline aligns to the action taken by the Illinois State Board of Education which calls for remote learning to continue until public health officials make the determination that in-person instruction is able to occur.
Our eLearning Program will resume on Monday, April 6th and will continue on a Monday – Thursday schedule until further notice. Our Teachers and Staff will focus on continuity in learning and will remain available from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day to help provide ongoing guidance, instruction, and support for our students and families. Remember, the emphasis on the “e” in our e-Learning program is engagement!
Our Principals will follow-up with more detailed school-based information related to grades and final report cards after we resume on April 6th. Our commitment is to ensure that a student’s grades will not be lowered as a result of this crisis. In fact, the emphasis moving forward will likely be on a ‘Pass – Incomplete’ structure. This approach will allow students to engage remotely and focus on continuing to learn without worry or concern about a negative impact on a specific grade or report card.
Our Week #1 K-8 student participation and engagement rate was 92% and Week #2 was 93%. This measure is more than a ‘check-in’. It demonstrates actual student engagement and participation in our eLearning modules. Keep up the great work everyone! Gower Greeting: Our district has been recognized nationally for our implementation of Capturing Kids Hearts. This process is important to us and it has simply become a ‘way of being ‘ in Gower over time. A critical part of this process is greeting students at the classroom door. There are many ways to greet a student at the door. And typically, this is done with a handshake. But the ongoing COVID-19 crisis has made it clear that a number of typical practices are being revisited. As we prepare to return to school, in a post-COVID-19, face-to-face environment, be sure to ask your child about the ‘Gower Greeting’ ahead of time. Practice it with them. Help them understand the importance of a polite and respectful greeting, and why this one might just be the perfect fit for Gower
