COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) Update – March 20, 2020; 5:00 p.m.
Given the stay-at-home order issued earlier this afternoon by our Governor, which begins tomorrow at 5:00 p.m. and extends through the end of the day on April 7th, Gower School District will further limit our public access and will continue to practice social distancing as recommended. Furthermore, Monday, April 6th and Tuesday, April 7th will be scheduled as eLearning Days in Gower School District to help accommodate this new order. At this time, the Governor has not formally announced an extended school closure. However, the Governor has previously stated that families should be prepared for such an announcement as this situation continues to evolve rapidly.
Gower School District administrators maintain an open line of communication with officials from the DuPage County Health Department, the DuPage Regional Office of Education, and the Illinois State Board of Education. We are aware that the Chicago Public Schools are closed through April 21st and will continue to work in concert with our local, regional, and state partners, including officials from surrounding area school districts, to continue to push for the most effective, and coordinated, recommendation for school closure during these uncertain times.
As stated in the Gower West and Gower Middle Principal Newsletters sent earlier today, our eLearning schedule will move to a Monday-Thursday schedule for our students beginning next week. This adjustment will allow our staff to use Fridays to make the necessary adjustments to help maintain the continuity in education expected during this crisis. eLearning activities will not be scheduled during Spring Break. On average, our K-8 student participation and engagement rate has been 92% illustrating that our staff, and our school community as a whole, has stepped up to meet this widespread challenge. As we say, #ThisisGower
Gower West and Gower Middle School will be closed to outside access through April 7th. Only visitors completing critical facility work and repairs, or visitors with a scheduled appointment to pick up necessary items (i.e. student medication, loaner device, etc.) will be allowed access.
Administrative Staff will continue to remain on site, as directed throughout this crisis, and will work with related staff groups remotely, as needed, to ensure that the most essential services provided by Gower School District continue.
Our Grab & Go Breakfast and Lunch Program will continue until further notice and in accordance with the most up-to-date public health recommendations. However, beginning Monday, March 23, 2020 the new hours of this pick-up program will be 8:30-10:00 a.m. and will remain at Door #1 at Gower West. Our staff is focusing on providing non-perishables through the continuation of this program as we continue to work with our food service partners and suppliers throughout this situation.
Please contact us with any further school-related questions or concerns and be sure to leave a voice message.
