Gower District News

COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) Update – March 18, 2020; 9:00 a.m.

Good morning Gower Community, please review the following updates:

eLearning: Our District eLearning Program is well underway. Our staff has taken advantage of their previous experience and have absolutely stepped up to meet this challenge! On Monday, our student participation and engagement rate was 91% across our school district (K-8) – showing that our Gower Families have stepped up too! We have received a number of emails from parents applauding our collective effort as well as a few complaints as can be expected in times like these. It is important to know that our Teachers are fully committed to demonstrating just how much we value a community that continues to show such strong support for and investment in its public schools.

It is also important to know that the 9:00 p.m. activity deadline is for our record keeping and is used to help our Teachers identify students to follow-up with and provide individual support as needed. If you child is ‘engaging’ with the eLearning Modules as assigned, then you’re set! The 9:00 p.m. line was simply drawn to help us manage an effective program and NOT to cause any unnecessary angst or concern for our students and families. Our Teachers are working with their students and families. It is important to keep these lines of communication open and flowing in both directions . After all, as our eLearning website makes clear, the emphasis on the “e” is engagement

Plan-Do-CHECK-ACT: This cycle is not an unfamiliar concept in the Gower School Community. We clearly had an eLearning plan in place before this public health crisis and we sure are doing it. As mentioned, we are receiving feedback and that means our focus is on the ‘check’ and ‘act’ parts of the cycle. Please continue to reach out to us and provide the feedback that  allows us to improve.

Meals for Students: First, a ‘shout out’! Like our Teachers and Support Staff, our Food Service staff have stepped up to meet the challenge without delay. Yesterday, they began distributing both Breakfast & Lunch Meals to our students/families in need and will work to continue this program in accordance with the most up-to-date public health recommendations. This is our way of supporting the community that has invested, and continues to invest, in our success!

Breakfast & Lunch Meals are available to any Gower Family in need, regardless of their Free or Reduced lunch status, Monday – Friday, from 8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Gower West, Door #1 as a “Grab-n-Go” process (look for the tent). Both meals are served cold and distributed at the same time by a simple pick-up process. Additional meals will be distributed on Friday for the weekend. Walk-up services are acceptable and anyone unable to travel to take advantage of this program should contact the Gower West School Office directly at 630-286-4925 to discuss possible delivery service.

Please, please, please share this information with your neighbors; especially those over 65 and in need of such a service. We understand that our Community Newsletter does not reach everyone that resides in the Gower Community and invests in the ongoing success of our schools. You can help us by sharing our Community Newsletter page and helping your neighbors subscribe in order to stay informed. For more information contact either of our school direct lines:

Counseling Services:  Please reach out to our Student Services Team directly for individual student support such as self-care strategies and coping skills.

Status of Local Exposure: Currently, there are no known confirmed cases of COVID-19 associated directly with a Gower student or staff member. However, we are aware of the escalating situation at the Chateau Senior Living facility in Willowbrook that has been impacted by this virus.  Continue to monitor the local community village websites of Willowbrook and Burr Ridge as they have been providing community updates. And please visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), and/or the DuPage County Health Department (DCHD), websites for updated information and be sure to follow their latest recommendations.

Next Steps: This situation continues to be a rapidly evolving one. Further updates will be provided should the current situation in our school district change and posted to the District News Page at http://gower62.com/district/

Take care of yourself and each other.
